Take three minutes to follow ten simples examples of calculations
Calculation Example 01: simple calculation in a row
This is a simple calculation. Please note that you can edit any entry to correct errors.
Calculation Example 02: simple calculation in a column
You may choose to display the same operation in a column, if you think numbers in a column are easier to handle
Calculation Example 03: simple calculation in a column using the ∑ button
Since adding the “+” sign after each addendum can be time consuming, you can activate the ∑ button after typing all the numbers.
Calculation Example 04: note taking
You may choose to archive this calculation and add comments to it. In the future, aCalcMemo will let you search and retrieve the calculation that you stored as a memo as well.
For example you could search "Rome" and get this memo.
Calculation Example 05: note taking and advanced calculation
Now you choose to perform an operation on this aCalcMemo record to find out the USD equivalent of this journey to Rome.
You can add “()” and multiply by the correct exchange ratio for Euro/USD.
Calculation Example 06: note taking and variables usage.
Suppose you are in Rome with three friends: Tim, Julia and Fred.
You want to check the total cost of the trip and what each person paid.
The use of Variables in our case allows to register individual entries in their dedicated Memory, like we did with the M+ and M- buttons in traditional calculators, only we have multiple "M+ or - buttons.
You name each Variable after each member of the trip, eg "Me" for yourself and you paid 100 Euro for the Hotel.
You add the variable “Tim” who paid the breakfast bill (20 Euro), the variable “Julia” who paid the taxi (30 Euro), the variable “Fred” who paid nothing.
When a variable is defined it can be used in the calculation by just writing the variable name.
Calculation Example 07: note taking and calculating with variables usage.
Imagine that on the second day you all pay the same expenses (see example 6).
You can add these expenses in any single variable and get the total by following the same method used in the calculation examples that we have seen before.
By doing so, you are able to know how much anyone paid and the total cost of the trip.
Calculation Example 08: note taking and calculating with variables usage.
Like we did in example 5 you can calculate the USD exchange value of you trip by applying the exchange rate in the formula
Calculation Example 09: pasting a list of values and getting the result
In this example, you want to do calculate the total of a list of values copied from any external source, like a web site or an email or any text in general.
This time the numbers are on the right side of the text so you get the result in three steps:
1. paste what you copied
2. press the left arrow button, which tells iCalcMemo to analyze any text line from the left side to search for the numbers to be used for the calculations.
3. press the ∑
Doing this in a spreadsheet would have required a lot of editing since the numbers are embedded in the text, while with our approach the numbers are taken out of the text and used for the calculations. You can also copy the numbers extracted from the text and paste them into your spreadsheet for further analysis.
